Benchmarks Per Hour: A Clock Strategy
Translating time into items-per-fifteen-minute benchmark makes pacing feel real. Candidates who think "I should be at item 30 by 30 minutes" stay ahead; candidates who do not look at the clock drift behind silently.
Build the table
For a 60s-per-item exam:
- 15 minutes → 15 items
- 30 minutes → 30 items
- 60 minutes → 60 items
- 2 hours → 120 items
For a 70s/item exam:
- 30 minutes → ~25 items
- 60 minutes → ~51 items
- 2 hours → ~100 items
The discipline
Glance at the clock every 15 minutes. Compare current item number to target. If behind, accelerate by flagging more aggressively (don't sacrifice accuracy for speed — flag first, skim later).
Adjusting
If you're ahead, do nothing extra; do not relax. If behind, move on items ~1.25x your ceiling rather than ~1.5x — that's your margin.
NCLEX nuance
At ~85 items, the exam may stop. If you reach item 85 within ~85–95 minutes, you're roughly on pace for a pass-or-fail decision around then. Don't overthink pacing beyond that — finish items you have left cleanly.
