Identify the Call of the Question

By VeriScorePrep Team · 4 min

The "call of the question" is the specific thing the item asks you to do. It is usually the final clause, often set off by a colon or a question mark. Everything before it is context — needed for reasoning, but not the ask itself.

Examples

Why it matters

Options are written for a specific call. A statement that is true and useful can still be wrong if it does not answer the call. Naming the call before reading options is what keeps you from picking the truest option instead of the most-responsive one.

A practice habit

At the top of your scratch paper, write the call in three to five words. Compare it to each option: does this option respond to this call? If not, discard it even if it is factually correct. This single habit saves more points than any other.
