Don't Let One Hard Item Cost You Five

By VeriScorePrep Team · 3 min

A hard item doesn't just cost the time you spend on it. It costs the time you spend and the attention you don't have for the next item because your mind is still back on the hard one. The cascade is real, and it is the most common silent time loss on a long exam.

The cascade

Hard item #1 stalls → you commit late with residual doubt → on item #2 you're still thinking about #1 → you read #2's stem twice and miss the qualifier → you answer #2 wrong even though it's easy.

One item just cost you two.

The interruption

Make a clean mental break at the moment of commitment. Once you commit, the item is done. You can rescind at review time if the exam allows, but you cannot carry it forward as a thought.

A small ritual

After committing, many candidates benefit from a one-breath transition: exhale, look away from the item, return. The breath breaks the rumination; the item is filed as "done."

Practice

On timed practice, the awareness of the cascade usually arises after a practice panics. Reconstruct the pattern when you see your accuracy drop after a hard item — that's the signature. Build the clean-break reflex.

Practice with detailed rationales, study plans, and performance feedback.
