Generate and Weigh Options Under Pressure
On NGN "generate solutions" items and on complex decisions generally, the discipline of generating options before reading the provided list primes your reasoning pattern for evaluation.
The method
After identifying the priority problem and understanding the call:
- Mentally list 2-3 defensible actions you would take.
- Then read the provided options.
- Match your generated options to the list.
- Evaluate the unmatched ones for whether they're better.
Why it works
Generated options serve as benchmarks. A provided option either matches your reasoning (likely correct) or exceeds it (possibly correct but worth scrutiny) or falls below it (likely incorrect). The benchmarks filter fast.
Distractor risk
Options that exceed your generated ones are either genuinely better (test-makers know more than you) or distractors (plausible but unsafe). Cross-check against:
- Safety.
- Scope.
- Patient-centeredness.
Caveat
This is a tool for items where you have reasonable knowledge. If you cannot generate any options, don't force it — go straight to elimination. Forced generation under low knowledge produces confidently bad benchmarks.
Practice
On complex NGN items, force generation before reading options. Most candidates find by their third practice session the generation reflex activates automatically.
