Pacing Through Case Study Sets (NGN)
Next-Generation NCLEX (NGN) items come in case study sets: one scenario followed by 6 items that test different steps of the clinical judgment model. Managing the set as a unit keeps you from losing 6 items' worth of time.
Read the case once, deeply
The case (chart, vitals, history, notes) takes 60–90 seconds to absorb. Don't skim it; you'll re-read per item, which is slower. Each item adds new data or asks about an existing data point.
Allocate per item, not per set
Treat the set as 6 independent items, not as one mega-item. Budget your normal per-item time × 6, plus the 60-90s case setup. Approximately: 6 × 60s + 90s ≈ 7-8 minutes per set.
Use the case across items
The case carries forward. Don't re-read the chart for each item — refer to the chart for the specific datum asked. Use scratch paper to record rapid reference (current BP, last labs) so you don't bounce back and forth.
Embedded trend items
Several NGN items involve trending data — vitals over time, lab values over time. These take longer than single-snapshot items; budget an extra 20-30 seconds and read the trend before committing.
Practice
Drill NGN case sets as timed units, not as content reviews. The pacing habit transfers from timed reps; untimed practice doesn't build it.
