Active Practice Session Design
Practice sessions designed like workouts produce faster gains than ad-hoc question pulls. A session is a deliberate mix of volume, focus, and review.
Session template
- Warm-up (5 min): a small set on a known topic at high accuracy to settle attention.
- Mixed practice (15-25 min): interleaved sets across topics, timed.
- Targeted block (15-20 min): a focused set on a weak topic from your weakness map.
- Review (10 min): full rationale read on missed items.
- Mistake journal (5 min): log misses with trap types.
Total: 50-65 minutes. Construct sessions per available time.
Pacing the components
- Warm-up: untimed, easy.
- Mixed practice: timed at your per-item budget.
- Targeted block: mostly untimed, on hard items run the per-item workflow.
- Review: untimed, deliberate.
Why structured sessions beat ad-hoc
Most candidates pull random question batches ("let me do 20 questions") — they get volume but no targeted growth. Structured sessions concentrate volume on the right mix.
Pitfalls
- All-mixed, all-targeted, or all-review sessions — they serve different purposes, and skipping any one slows progress.
- Skipping the warm-up — the few minutes it costs are saved in focus.
