Build a Question-Reading Discipline
Most careless errors do not come from not knowing the content; they come from not reading the stem carefully. Candidates lose points not because they lacked the knowledge, but because they answered a slightly different question than the one being asked.
The discipline
Read the stem in full, top to bottom, without scanning the options first. Then identify the call of the question — the actual ask — before you look at any answer. Only when you can state, in your own words, what the question is asking, should you evaluate the options.
Common reading errors
- Skipping the last clause where the actual ask lives.
- Reading scan-into-options before reading the stem, which primes you to see what the options want you to see.
- Missing a single word — except, first, priority, best, initially, most — that flips the answer.
- Misreading a numeric value because the eye ran past it.
A practice intervention
Time yourself reading stems only — no answering. After each, write the call of the question in five words. This builds the muscle of reading for the ask instead of the answers. Candidates who do this for a week cut "careless" errors sharply.
