Math Items on TEAS — Fractions, Ratios, Algebra
TEAS math covers arithmetic, fractions, decimals, ratios/proportions, percentages, basic algebra, and a small amount of geometry and data interpretation. The content isn't advanced; the time pressure is.
Priority concepts
- Order of operations: PEMDAS — parentheses, exponents, multiplication/division (left to right), addition/subtraction.
- Cross-multiplication for proportions: a/b = c/d → a×d = b×c.
- Percent change: (new − old) ÷ old × 100.
- Metric conversions: cm/m/km, g/kg, mL/L. Drill until automatic.
- Algebra: solve linear equations; isolate variables by reversing operations.
- Geometry basics: area of rectangle (l × w), triangle (½ b h), circle (π r²); perimeter; volume of rectangular prism.
- Word problems: translate to equations carefully — the harder part is reading.
Common traps
- Forgetting to convert units (miles to feet, ml to L).
- Percentage of a percent (25% of 80% of 200 ≠ 25% × 200).
- Mixing up "X is what percent of Y" (X÷Y) vs "X increased by Y%" ((1+Y/100) × X).
Pacing
- ~64 seconds per math item. Write only what you need on scratch paper.
- Estimate before computing — eliminate options far from estimate.
