Time-Boxing Single-Best-Answer Items
Single-best-answer items have a target time. The NCLEX-RN is built for ~1 minute per item; the ASWB exams slightly less; the TEAS allows ~1 minute but with no adaptive stopping. Time-boxing each item keeps a five-item stall from becoming a twenty-item stall.
Set the box
Compute your per-item budget: (total minutes) ÷ (estimated items). For NCLEX that's roughly 60s; for ASWB Masters 2 hours / 170 items = ~70s; for TEAS 209 minutes ÷ 170 items = ~73s.
Apply a soft ceiling
For each item: if you're past the box and still unsure, flag and move on. Coming back later is cheap; staying is expensive. Most flagged items resolve within seconds on revisit.
Hard ceiling
If you're 2x the box on a single item, you must move regardless — even random guess beats stalling.
Why it works
Most time losses compound. A candidate stalls on one item, then carries the anxiety into the next, then the next. A clean "I've hit the box" boundary stops the cascade. You will return with fresh attention; the stuck item is rarely as hard when revisited.
Practice
Run untimed practice for content mastery, then run timed sets strictly with the box. The timed practice is where the budget becomes internalized.
