The 80/20 of Weak-Topic Triaging
When you have limited hours to study, the question is which topics deserve them. The 80/20 principle — that 20% of topics drive 80% of score risk — works well for high-yield exams.
Build a weakness map
Identify your weakest 5-10 topics by accuracy rate from practice sets. For each, estimate:
- How often it appears on the exam (high-yield vs. niche).
- Your current accuracy (high fragility).
- Effort to improve (depth needed to reach mastery).
The quadrants
- High yield, low accuracy: invest here first.
- High yield, high accuracy: maintenance only (light review).
- Low yield, low accuracy: ignore or skim.
- Low yield, high accuracy: ignore.
Pitfalls
- Investing hours in topics already mastered because they're pleasant to study.
- Skipping a high-yield topic because it feels hard — that's exactly where investment returns the most.
- "Studying everything equally" — this allocates equal effort to topics that earn unequal returns.
Re-evaluate
Re-tally the weakness map every 2-3 weeks. Topics should improve; new weaknesses surface. The map recalibrates your study to your current state, not your starting state.
